Moving to Aberdeen to start at Robert Gordon University is a big step, for you and for whoever is helping you pack the car. This is what to sort before you arrive, what to bring, and the admin nobody mentions until it is late.
Before you arrive
Enrol online. RGU calls it enrolment, and you cannot do it until your offer conditions are met — the Student Admissions Service emails you an invitation once they are. You check your personal details, including your term-time address, set up any payment arrangements, upload a photo for your student ID card and accept the university's terms. Full-time health students need a National Insurance number to hand.
It is not open-ended: RGU's enrolment page says enrolment "normally closes 10 days after the start of formal teaching", and your invitation email carries the exact date for your year. Miss it and you are talking to the admissions service rather than going to lectures.
Check the dates. For 2026/27, RGU's Welcome Week began Monday 14 September and Semester 1 teaching started Monday 21 September. The 2027/28 dates are not published yet, so take them from RGU's academic calendar rather than from anybody's guess, including ours.
Sort your funding. Scottish students apply through SAAS, students from England through Student Finance England, and in both cases the money only starts moving once RGU confirms you have enrolled. That gap at the start of September catches people out every year.
What is already sorted here
Your room is furnished, and every utility bill, the internet and contents insurance are in the rent, so there is no energy account to open and no broadband engineer to wait in for. There is a gym, a common room with a television and a pool table, a laundry room, secure bike storage and a garden. Entry is by access card with 24-hour CCTV, and maintenance is on site.
See what is availableWhat to bring
- Bedding — a duvet, pillows and covers. Check the bed size with the team before you buy, because it decides whether a single set fits.
- Towels.
- Kitchen basics: a plate, a bowl, a mug, cutlery, one pan and a baking tray. Do not overbuy. Half of it will be duplicated by whoever you share with, and you can split the bigger things once you have met them.
- A surge-protected extension lead, your laptop and every charger.
- A doorstop for the first week. An open door makes friends faster than anything organised for you.
- Warm layers and a proper waterproof. Aberdeen in November is not a myth.
- Documents: passport or driving licence, your offer and enrolment emails, and your funding letters.
If you would rather not carry it all up the A90, ask the team about a bedding pack and a kitchen pack made up and waiting in your room.

Register with a GP. NHS inform's advice to students is to do it when you arrive, not when something goes wrong: "You should register with a GP practice and dentist as soon as you can," it says, and "Don't wait until you feel ill or are in pain." Full details on NHS inform's student health pages.
Register to vote. You can be registered at your home address and your term-time one, though you may only vote once in any given election. Register at gov.uk.
Get your bus pass sorted. If you are 21 or under and living in Scotland, every bus in the country is free with a National Entitlement Card. It is the single most valuable thing on this list and it takes one application — see the getting to university guide.
Where to get help at RGU
Ask RGU and the Student Life Hub handle anything about your course, your ID card or official letters. Student Counselling and Wellbeing covers the harder weeks, the Inclusion Centre handles disability and dyslexia support, and RGU:Union runs the clubs, the societies and a cost-of-living programme that is genuinely worth knowing about. All of them are listed on RGU's support and advice pages.
Asking early is not a fuss. Every one of those services would rather hear from you in week three than in week eleven.
For parents
Bills, internet and contents insurance are included, so there is one payment and no winter energy surprise. Entry is by access card, there is 24-hour CCTV, and the maintenance team is on site rather than on a rota from another city. If you would like to see the room before committing, the team will do an in-person or video viewing.
